There is far more to Macmillan Cancer Support in Merseyside than just nurses, coffee mornings and cake.

The charity has grown to be the UK’s leading source of support, helping more and more people affected by the illness.

And, with the number of people living with cancer in the UK set to grow from 2.5 million people to 4 million by 2030, more people than ever will need support with long-term side effects.

Every day around 24 people in Merseyside hear the devastating news that they have cancer, and 11 people die from the illness. That’s why Macmillan is on hand across the county to provide vital emotional, practical and financial support to people affected and their families.

This is done not just by Macmillan nurses, who specialise in some of the 200 forms of cancer, but also Macmillan GPs, consultants, psychologists, occupational therapists, dieticians, counsellors, social workers, information managers and benefits advisors.

They all help support people affected by cancer – from the moment of diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.

Macmillan also provides information through its website, mobile units and support centres. In Merseyside there are many Macmillan Information And Support Centres, based in hospitals and the local community, where teams of experts and trained volunteers are on hand to answer questions.

For example, there is a Macmillan Information and Support Centre based in Stanley Street, Southport. It is open Monday to Friday, from 10am to 4pm. And anyone affected by cancer is welcome to call in and see what they offer.

Visitors to the centres can: Access booklets, leaflets and other free informtation; access services such as Health & Wellbeing Events, HOPE Courses, counselling and pampering sessions; access the "Move More" physical activity programme for people affected by cancer.

The Southport Macmillan Centre, based in the heart of the community, also hosts a range of support groups – whether you enjoy walking, crafts, singing or gardening – so you can get to know people who may have shared a similar experience to you.

The centre won a national Macmillan Excellence Award in November 2016, for the development of the Southport & Formby Cancer Recovery Programme to support people living with and beyond cancer.

Southport Macmillan Cancer Information And Support Manager Helen Jones says: "We're here to support anyone affected by cancer, as well as family and friends, in any way that we can.

"If we can't help you on site, we can put you in touch with someone who can. We offer a drop in service, listening ear, many support groups, courses, events and programmes and we would encourage anyone affected by cancer to get in touch and see how we can help to support them."

None of this would be possible without brilliant fundraising efforts all year round. So why not get involved with some fun fundraising with your friends and family?
