There is far more to Macmillan Cancer Support in Merseyside than just nurses, coffee mornings and cake. The charity has grown to be the UK’s leading source of support, helping more and more people affected by the illness. And, with the number of people living with cancer in the UK set to grow from 2.5 million people to 4 million by 2030, more people than ever will need support with long-term side effects.

Every day around 24 people in Merseyside hear the devastating news that they have cancer, and 11 people die from the illness. That’s why Macmillan is on hand across the county to provide vital emotional, practical and financial support to people affected and their families.

This is done not just by Macmillan nurses, who specialise in some of the 200 forms of cancer, but also Macmillan GPs, consultants, psychologists, occupational therapists, dieticians, counsellors, social workers, information managers and benefits advisors.

They all help support people affected by cancer – from the moment of diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.

Macmillan also provides information through its website, mobile units and support centres. In Merseyside there are many Macmillan Information And Support Centres, based in hospitals and the local community, where teams of experts and trained volunteers are on hand to answer questions. For example, there is a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service at Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Fazakerley, open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm. Visitors to the centres like the one at Aintree can:

l Access booklets, leaflets and other free informtation.

l Access services such as counselling, complementary therapies and courses to help support people after treatment.

l Access help from Macmillan benefits advisors on a very wide variety of financial issues.

Aintree's Macmillan Cancer Information And Support manager GIll Marflitt says: "Whatever you need, we'll be there. And if we can't help you on site, we can put you in touch with someone who can. We link with advisors from the likes of Age UK and armed forces charity SAAFA too. We even have the Macmillan Clothes Bank Scheme which helps provide new clothes when people have changed size due to their  cancer treatment."

None of this would be possible without a brilliant annual fund-raising effort, and last year 2,054 coffee mornings were held in Merseyside, raising around £982,350. So why not get involved with some fun fund-raising with your friends and family?
