Educating the whole child is the aim at St. Mary’s College, one of the North West’s leading academic schools. So, as well as enjoying excellent tuition resulting in outstanding academic results, pupils also take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities that will help them develop to their full potential in life.

Every child is offered the chance to play a musical instrument and they can choose to take part in sports including cricket, rugby, netball, hockey, tennis and athletics.

The school says its aim is to discover and nurture talent in all fields in a friendly yet challenging environment.

Principal Michael Kennedy says: “Our pupils achieve excellent academic results at all key stages. But we place great emphasis on the development of the whole person.”

This begins at their Bright Sparks Nursery where tots up to the age of four can learn and develop in a safe and happy environment – even getting to grips with the basics of French, Spanish and ICT.

St. Mary’s Preparatory School The Mount, for four to 11-year-olds, continues with a curriculum which is focused on the key skills of reading, writing and maths, while developing a lifelong love of learning in the pupils.

And St. Mary’s College prides itself on inspirational teaching methods for its 11-18-year-olds, where childen are taught how to think, not what to think.

St. Mary’s offers a broad and balanced curriculum – along with small class sizes and excellent facilities.

Pupils reap the rewards with  a high “value added” in their progress and some of the best exam results in the country.

Most pupils join the school at 11, through interview and entrance examination. Some join in the sixth form too, where they learn the habit of independent study and often go on to the Russell Group of universities or even Oxbridge.

St. Mary’s was founded as a Catholic school by Edmund Rice but around a third of pupils are from other denominations. And, though it is a fee-paying school, scholarships are on offer and a significant proportion of families get some help with fees.
