Neil Barton established Barton Contractors Ltd in 1998, having worked in the farming industry since leaving school.

He runs the business with his wife Heather, and his father Gordon also helps out.

Barton Contractors employs two members of staff, Luke Bassinder, who has been on the team for five years, and Tom Dewhurst, who has worked for the company for two years.

Neil says: “We can help farmers by offering baling services, using machinery to produce round, square and conventional-shaped bales.

“We are a hands-on business and can visit several farms in one day.

“We always stay until the job is done and on many occasions work a 24-hour shift system to get hay baled when farmers need it doing.”

Bale wrapping and bale stacking services are also available and Barton Contractors Ltd will take calls to offer assistance anywhere in the country, not just in the Ribble Valley and the North West.

Slurry spreading is another essential service and Barton Contractors can provide a choice of 1,500 to 3,000 gallon slurry tankers or rear discharge muck spreaders up to 14 tonne capacity.

“Our muck spreaders are available for self-drive or we provide a spreading service,” Neil explains. The firm hires tractors out on a self-drive basis, with machines ranging from 125bhp to 250bhp, some with front linkage and power take-off.

Barton Contractors also hires out JCB Fastracs and the company is flexible about hire periods.

Neil says: “You can hire a tractor for as little as one day or for longer periods. For example, a farmer in Cambridgeshire has hired a JCB Fastrac from us on a two-year deal.” In addition to machinery, Barton Contractors offers general digging and concreting services and installation of farm tracks.

The team can also install cattle grids, gateways and gates.

Hedge cutting is another speciality.

A range of equine services is available, including chain harrowing and rolling fields and paddocks.

Fertiliser spreading to promote grass growth, muck spreading and muck midden pile removal is also carried out by the team. Weed spraying is another in-demand service while hay, haylage and straw supply is available to buy.

Neil says: “We offer a very flexible service on hay, haylage and straw – anything from one bale to as many as you need. No order is too small so if you only need two bales a week and have no storage space, we can help.”

Barton Contractors undertakes sand paddock installation plus land drainage and jetting.

Neil adds: “Our website details everything we offer. We work when the farming community needs us, so don’t hesitate to ring when you need help.”
