Many loyal customers from the Ribble Valley already know that if you are hoping for a perfect display whatever the weather, Peter Harrison’s garden centre can provide everything you need.

At his well laid-out nursery off Bells Lane, Hoghton, you can get everything from bedding plants and alpines, perennials and shrubs to fruit trees, ornamental trees, seed potatoes and seasonal veg plants.

And if you’re stuck for something to grow them in, Peter has a wide range of pots and baskets, planters and raised bed kits.

Quality, home-grown plants are Peter’s mainstay and he says: “Because of demand we have constructed three new tunnels to increase plant production.

“Unlike a lot of growers who provide plants for garden centres with diaries in mind, we grow with the weather and to suit the climate locally.

“So we have lots of herbaceous perennials and alpines on sale, which attract bees and other garden-beneficial insects. Call in to see what is available.”

Peter is particular about his compost, too. Multipurpose, with added John Innes, is a favourite.

“We open the bags to show customers what it is like so they can see and feel the quality,” he says. “We buy in bulk to sell at a good price.”

Barks and aggregates are also in plentiful supply, as are stone ornaments and bird stations.

Peter sells ready-filled baskets to hang outside your door or, if you have a favourite at home, he will refill it for you with all the season’s colourful blooms. In the shop, pictured left, is a range of Fothergill’s seeds, Draper garden tools, weed control products and fertiliser.

And for relaxing in your garden, Peter sells outdoor furniture including the Hutton wooden range and weather-resistant Europa products.

The nursery is a real family firm – Peter’s parents Jim and Anne, who started it as a market garden in 1976, still work in the business – and wife Lynne can be found in the office.
