There is unlikely to be a better advertisement for a school than its pupils and it is a source of great pride at St Pius X that most children choose to attend through recommendations. Visitors are always impressed when they meet children in the course of a regular day. They report how polite, confident and friendly they are and leave full of praise for the school’s warm, friendly atmosphere. With a varied curriculum that is both creative and academically rigorous, the aim is to engage, challenge and enthuse all pupils. This was recognised during a recent visit from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) which concluded that “Pupils have a very positive attitude to work”. By adopting a flexible approach, the school is able to offer a tailored programme of learning that gives every child the opportunity to excel and fulfil their potential in a supportive environment. This approach extends to the extracurricular activities, which include languages, music and sport. In fact, in 2016 a team of pupils from the school was crowned “Britain’s Smartest Kids” after winning a national general knowledge competition on CBBC. For head teacher Bridgeen Banks, the importance of providing a rounded education that is enjoyed by the children is paramount. “We have an excellent reputation for success in exam results, with a consistently high number of pupils gaining entry to independent and grammar schools, and we know this is a high priority for parents,” she says. “But we’re also aware of the added value we offer in allowing children to develop as capable, confident individuals. This isn’t measured in exam successes but is valued just as much.” Indeed, the latest ISI report noted: “Children are polite and courteous” and “The personal development of pupils is excellent.”

The nursery:

At Oak House Nursery the aim is always to provide children with an enjoyable experience that also puts down the foundations for future learning. The success of this strategy was noted by Independent Schools Inspectors, who said the early years foundation children “achieve extremely well” thanks to “enthusiastic and creative” teaching. The curriculum of stimulating, fun-filled activities, which makes the most of spacious outdoor play and learning areas, is combined with a programme of focused activities including music, drama, French, tennis and ballet – all from an early age. The result is nursery pupils well prepared for a smooth transition into reception. Flexible nursery sessions are available through the Nursery Voucher scheme. Oak House Nursery holds the Step into Quality Kite Award from Lancashire County Council Education Department.
