Perfectionist joiner Chris Bond can transform your staircase or carry out any bespoke work around your home.

He started his working life as a fitter at Leyland DAF but at 19 decided to get a trade.

A creative type, he gravitated to working with wood and trained with high-end joiners Richard Palmer Building, of Preston, before working for Ian Wells Joinery and JK Beardsworth, of Fulwood, where he gained a wealth of experience which set him up perfectly to start his own business in 2008.

After years of site work, Chris got his own workshop to begin bespoke manufacturing, including timber-frame buildings, carports and cabinetry, such as built-in wardrobes, alcove units and more.

Then he found his niche. “A customer asked me to design a staircase renovation for him,” he says. “I did it and absolutely loved it but only after that did I become aware that big national companies did the same job for eye-watering prices. I decided I could offer an exact, like-for-like service for a much better price, making such a luxury available to people who thought it was simply beyond their budget.”

Chris majors on staircase renovation or ‘transformation’, as he calls it, keeping the main structure of a staircase, removing all non-structural elements such as newel posts, hand-rails and spindles and replacing them with beautiful, solid wood parts such as oak, ash, walnut or other hardwoods and replacing tired old spindles with sleek glass balusters or even wrought iron spindles.

Renovating a stair is less disruptive and cheaper than replacing the entire staircase, which is usable during the work, and it is often completed in as little as three days. The look is the client’s choice – modern or traditional – using locally-sourced European oak, American black walnut or a stunning African hardwood such as zebrano. Chris adds: “I am courteous, tidy and friendly and always have excellent relationships with my customers, some of whom I have been doing repeat work for since I started out on my own. My aim is aways to surpass people’s expectations and build long-lasting working relationships with my customers.”
