The big question with care for the elderly is “How can we trust you?”

Jeanette Taylor (far right), HomeCare Mellor’s owner, takes the question in her stride.

She notes that her businesss has been running since 1993 and says: “We have been tried and tested over those years.”

She and her manager Sara McGaughey are proud to point out that inspections by the Care ­Quality Commission have always been good and have never found anything of concern. “Those reports are all online for everyone to see,” says Sara.

HomeCare Mellor Ltd has grown rapidly and now has 110 full and part-time staff, caring for more than 300 ­clients, including many in the Ribble Valley.

And they are keen to recruit more staff, who would be given full training on appointment.

The team, which has bases in Blackburn and Fulwood, assists people who are elderly, have physical disabilities, learning ­difficulties or need ­palliative care. 

They work in partnership with the NHS – Central Lancashire Primary Care Trust – and Lancashire Social Services, for which HomeCare Mellor has been a preferred provider over many years.

Sara monitors ­client satisfaction closely. 

“We get fantastic feedback,” she says. “I’d say 99.9% of people who use our services are satisfied.”

With 26 years of care ­experience under her belt, Sara has worked with the team in her current role for seven years.

All staff are DBS-checked and trained by Jan ­Stephenson, in ­conjunction with Preston and Runshaw colleges.

Training is ongoing to refresh staff skills and knowledge.

Owner Jeanette, meanwhile, still takes a hands-on ­approach and has personal understanding of the ­difficulties faced by families, having an 83-year-old father who lives on Tenerife.

“We are approachable, we listen and we can empathise with everyone’s situation,” she says.

“We always have someone on hand who can assist with any issues, however sensitive.”

The team aims to maximise people’s independence so they can enjoy life – taking clients on senior citizens’ outings with ­Cosgrove Coaches.


The Services

Personal care: Includes help with getting up and putting to bed, assistance with bathing, toileting/continence care.

Pop-in service: Coffee/tea, pressure care relief & more.

Medication: Assistance under guidance of your GP.

Home maintenance: Most general jobs, cleaning,


Domestic help: Housework, shopping, laundry/washing/ironing.

Meals: Preparation and cooking.

Respite care: Day/evening

sitting, overnight sleeping.

Holiday cover, including help in Tenerife.

The Process

The first port of call for anyone interested in HomeCare Mellor’s services is customer liaison manager Janet Strange, pictured below.

She will arrange to visit your home for an assessment, where she can discuss with clients and family/friends what support requirements they are seeking and work with them to develop a plan to cover their needs.

Support ranges from medication prompts or assisting someone to get up in the morning, through to domestic chores.

Janet gathers all relevant information to devise a tailored package to suit each individual.

“As well as the support, an important part of visits is the companionship and stimulation it can offer to clients,” she says.

Regular reviews are held after a package is put in place, to check everything is going well. Contact with a client’s family is encouraged – and one lady even emails from Australia for updates.



The Client

Three years ago Mavis Riding went into residential care after a hospital stay but she was desperate to be back in her own home – so a friend contacted HomeCare Mellor. Mavis, 86, suffers from polymyalgia arthritica and has great difficulty moving about and dealing with daily tasks. “We arranged a care package where people came in the day and somebody stayed overnight,” says Janet Strange. “Her confidence has grown so much she now has daytime visits to help with daily tasks and just a pop-in visit in the evening to help get ready for bed.” 

HomeCare Mellor helped with access to NHS and social services funding and adaptations to her house. Staff now visit five times a day.

Mavis says: “It has been so good, The girls who come are lovely and it has helped me to stay at home, for which I am very grateful.”


Holiday Helpers

Organised as professionally as her British business, they help with any care needs of ex-pats and holidaymakers, whether they be supported travel, help with accidents/illness on holiday or providing respite care while on holiday.
