A surprise government U-turn over feed-in tariffs for solar PV panels left Carl Gomez, like many in the renewable energy industry, with a major headache.

The feed-in tariff (FIT) – the amount people receive from the government for a 25-year period if they install solar PV panels – was due to be reduced in April 2012 but this was unexpectedly brought forward to December 12, 2011. “The sudden increase in demand to beat the deadline created a massive problem with sourcing the equipment,” said Carl.

Nevertheless, Carl insists that even after the deadline, solar PV panels are still a worthwhile investment.  “Apart from being a green technology, it can still give you a return of around 9% when the RPI and cost of annual paid-for electricity price rises are taken into consideration,” he said.

Carl recently returned from a trip overseas to secure PV equipment at preferential rates in order for clients to able to achieve a good rate of return on their investment despite the reduction in the FIT.

Carl’s company AEI is also is an MCS-registered installer for small wind turbines, which won’t see a drop in FIT until April. Turbines start from around £15,000, although all are subject to planning approval before they can be installed and also incur non-refundable upfront costs.

Carl got his first taste of electrical work while working as part of the maintenance team at the Cliffs and Imperial hotels during his school holidays. After completing his apprenticeship, he set up in

business at the age of 21 and some 18 months later formed a partnership, Gomez & Schofield Electrical Contractors, which flourished for around 10 years, and eventually led to Carl setting up Advanced Electrical Installations, Aei (NW) Ltd.

The firm has a staff of eight delivering quality work at competitive prices, to commercial and light industrial clients with a small amount of works being carried out in the domestic sector. Aei prides itself on excellent customer satisfaction and service, which is reflected in the high customer retention of their clients, including Arnold School, Blackpool Sixth Form, Coral Island, Affordable Windows, Bispham & Cleveleys Kitchens, to name just a few.

The scope of work that Aei carries out includes general power and lighting; fire alarms; emergency lighting; electrical test/inspection/certification; street/car park lighting; CCTV and door access control; and data cabling.

Philip Andrew of Blackpool

With reference to 11 Freemantle Avenue Blackpool. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Carl and his company for sorting out the mess of the work done by someone who claimed to be an electrician, who left an 85-year-old lady with no heating or lighting. Thanks to Carl who came down and spend two days sorting out the mess. I would fully recommend this company and its employees who do a top quality job with no problems.
