Flat roofs, Preston, flat roof repairs, Preston

If you’ve a flat roof with worn or leaky felt, joiner Ben Swinson has the perfect solution – rubber.  His roof coating from Firestone can last up to 50 years – and is guaranteed for 20 years by Ben’s supplier (see article below). “It’s a new product,” said Ben, who trained with Redman and Bispham, Ashton, “and the same price as felt, which lasts up to 12 years.” The roofing material is made of tyre rubber. It comes in a single sheet, ordered to fit the roof size, so there are no joints to leak, and it is applied with the same glue used for tyre punctures. Once stuck on, it will not come off. Among the first in Preston to start laying Firestone rubber, Ben’s firm – formerly Swinson Joinery, now renamed Flexi-roof UK – has now laid over 13,000 square metres, from a porch to a block of flats. “If you’ve a cold room – with a dormer roof, for instance – you can put insulation board on top of the existing roof, then put the rubber cover straight on top – it saves money long-term.” Note: Most insurers expect felt roofs to be recovered every 12 years for cover to apply not just to buildings but to the contents, too

Ben believes he has installed more Firestone rubber flat roofs around Preston than anyone else. “My supplier says we’re the biggest buyer around Preston,” he says. “We’re always busy and there’s a waiting list – I generally have about 15 waiting to do, though leaking roofs go to the top of the list.” Weather temperature can affect installation – it has to stay above five degrees centigrade for 24 hours before a roof can be installed. Ben’s training course performance and subsequent expertise has gained him a place on his supplier’s approved list of contractors. “We’re asked to do them all over the country, particularly in the north of England,” he adds, “from Maryport and Whitehaven over to Newcastle.” Ben’s supplier sends a written 20-year guarantee to every customer on completion of the work.

A minister's testimonial

Ben recently replaced 100  square metres of flat roofing  (left) at Wycliffe Memorial Church, Ashton. Here’s what its pastor, Dave Solt, had to say: “Ben is very polite, hard-working, likeable and honest. “He was sensitive to our needs and worked round our schedule so the church was not inconvenienced in any way. He showed himself trustworthy and I was happy to give him use of our keys. He cleaned everything up before he left for the day and was careful to leave things secure against the rain. “I am sure the work he has done means there is going to be no leakage on this roof for years to come. He’s a decent guy. I would love to have him in our church!”

Flat roof facts

  • Single-ply roofing membrane made of a synthetic rubber
  • Same price as felt for material and fitting
  • Easily repaired if holed and needs little or no
  • maintenance
  • No joints to leak as it comes in single sheets big enough for most residential roofs
  • While felt can blister in heat and crack in the cold, rubber is highly flexible and stretches to accommodate temperature change or building movement

Mr and Mrs P Howarth of Broughton, Preston

Very prompt service. Very clean job. Well dressed, well mannered and pleasant workers. Just what we needed. Many thanks.

Alan P Bedford, of Chorley Road, Walton-le-Dale, Preston

We contacted Ben rather late in the season concerning our two ageing flat roofs. With the summer weather having turned and a long waiting list, we’d resigned ourselves to waiting until next year. Ben, however, was determined to sort out our problems before the onset of winter. In what was probably the last practical week of the year, Ben and Adam worked flat out to strip off the failing roofs, insert insulation (there was absolutely none when they started) and install new boards and Firestone synthetic rubber membrane. This all had to be synchronised with far from ideal weather. The roofs were fitted with great attention to detail and the finished result is far superior to any covers we’ve had before. The commitment of Ben and Adam means a great deal to us and we can now relax during the forthcoming winter as the rain lashes down; we are much warmer now as well.
