Nursery, Penwortham, Longton, Preston

Visiting this Preston-based nursery with a difference is now even better – thanks to a recent extension in 2016.

A new greenhouse has been opened, products are easier to see and queueing to pay is far smoother at the new checkout.

For garden lovers, Newgate stands out with its expertise and wide range of  plants. You also get expert advice from owner Michael Cookson, who has an encyclopaedic knowledge of plants – so he can answer most people’s queries.

If you want plants for a dry area or plant flowers that fail to thrive, he’ll guide you to the perfect plants for your particular patch.

Michael is spoilt for choice as they stock many thousands of plants, shrubs and trees, most grown on the premises and able to cope with the local climate.

Michael has a Myerscough College horticulture degree and a remarkable memory – hence his ability to give advice. Take a soil sample and he’ll test to ensure it suits the plants he recommends.

Michael, the third generation of the nursery’s family owners, adds: “We offer great customer service. People bring in a leaf to ask what’s wrong with it – that personal touch makes us different.”

He also offers a border design  service – for free. Give him a picture and basic details and he’ll design a border in front of your eyes, forming some of the nursery’s massive stock into a border to your measurements.

“We are a working nursery,” said Michael, 36. “We have the widest range of plants in the area – up to nearly 10,000  – and our prices are cheaper as we grow our own stock and pass those savings on to the customer.”

Stock ranges from bedding plants, perennials and alpines to exotics and bamboos, climbing plants, fruit trees and vegetable products (they started in 1927 as a vegetable producer).

They have a water features area and do hedging, garden maintenance and landscaping, including turfing.

Customers come from afar – Michael has designed a jungle for a customer in Manchester! He adds: “People leave us happy. We have a loyal customer base who return because we look after them.”

HANGING BASKETS

Newgate offers a summer and winter hanging baskets service. Bring in your old summer containers and they will refill them with winter plants – or vice versa. They also rent out plants for events and functions.
