Garstang carpet shop owner Paul Mathieson may be highly successful – but you won’t find him expanding his business.

He doesn’t simply sell floor coverings and beds – he also aims to provide superb service and customer satisfaction. “I don’t want to expand and get too big. I want to keep our reputation and you can’t do that if you have too much on,” Paul says.

If you buy a product, he will bring it to your home or business, assemble or fit it and only leave when you are happy with the finished item. “We’re not a delivery service, we’re a service provider. If you do what you say, turn up on the day when you say and give the customer the price they expect, they are happy. I try not to give people any reason to be upset.”

To achieve that, he employs carpet fitters rather than use contractors.

Paul, 54, supplies to Lancashire and beyond, even as far as Manchester. He has recently shared his premises with Bluebird Interiors, designers who moved from Garstang’s Bridge Street in September and sell blinds, curtains, wallcoverings and rugs.

Paul has fitted and sold carpets for 30 years and has his own approach to business. “It’s all about trust,” he says. “About doing the job how you said you would. Just being honest.”

This was illustrated as Paul was interviewed by Home Handbook. He’d just spoken about high levels of customer satisfaction when a lady walked in to pay, saying how happy she was with the finished job.

Another shop customer said he’d come from near Morecambe, backing Paul’s claim of clients from afar.

Finally, he answered a call from a customer who couldn’t shut a door after a carpet fit – and rang his staff straightaway to fix it. “We don’t like problems to fester, we sort it out – it’s always doors,” he adds.

Originally from the Rochdale area, Paul was a regimental policeman with the Royal Corps of Transport before he became a carpet fitter. He ended up buying the business he worked for and never looked back, building up three centres before moving to Garstang 12 years ago.

Paul has gone as far as the Isle of Wight, Cornwall and Nottinghamshire to fit carpets after requests from customers moving from the local area. “They feel more secure asking us to go and do the work. It’s not all about price – it’s down to trust – and we are grateful for the work.”

If you’ve bought a new home, don’t worry. Mathieson staff always move the furniture to fit your carpets at no extra cost – “it’s not a problem”.

Commercial clients include interior designers – bringing work for, among others, professional footballers – and rental properties on the Duke of Westminster’s estate.

“We particularly like domestic work,” adds Paul. “We enjoy the fact people appreciate what we do for them.”

He uses trusted suppliers with proven products, rather than chopping and changing. He’s on the A6 with good parking – pop in and see what’s on offer.

Among nearly 25 beds on display are orthopaedic beds, mattresses that keep you cool in summer, mattresses to aid blood circulation or simply provide the ultimate in luxury with 5,000 supporting springs. The stylish Highgrove bed has 3,000 springs and is filled with natural fibres.

With 30 years in business behind him, Paul believes in stocking quality products which serve the customer well and keep returned goods to a minimum. He is a fan of Highgrove beds - “the quality is second to none and they deliver every Friday so there’s no long wait for customers.”

Paul also stocks a wide variety of quality bedroom furniture..
