Going to see Michael Ball at Broadway Pharmacy can literally save your life. The 32-year-old pharmacist recently advised a patient with a leg rash to attend A&E and her grateful husband returned a few days later to say she’d had live-saving treatment for a thrombosis.

It’s a dramatic example of how local pharmacists now do far more than dispense medication and sell health care products.

Michael, who runs the business with its owners of nearly 60 years, Keith and Maureen Fletcher, is passionate about the new, more pro-active role the NHS is giving pharmacies.

A recent addition to the team is pharmacist Mark Oak (right), who has hospital experience and is very patient-orientated.

All the Broadway team is focused on putting pharmacy at the forefront of patient care by offering new services.

One example is flu vaccinations; from September the pharmacy can administer these free to at-risk patients and over-65s with no appointment needed!

Broadway is the first pharmacy to be accredited the Healthy Living Pharmacy status in Preston, meaning staff have been trained to offer health, dietary and well-being advice.

A chat about a chesty cough, for instance, may lead to an asthma review, lifestyle changes or referral to the free in-house smoking cessation clinic. If the pharmacist has concerns, it may lead to a fast-track GP referral.

The pharmacy offers a travel service, in which health advice and anti-malarials can be given without a GP appointment or prescription, It will soon cover all travel vaccinations from yellow fever to Japanese encephalitis.

A confidential erectile dysfunction clinic allows medication to be given, avoiding an often embarrassing GP visit.

Then there is the minor ailments service, where the pharmacist can give treatment and advice for a wide range of conditions from verrucas, warts and conjunctivitis to head lice, scabies or cold sores. The idea is to ease pressure on GPs and hospitals and save taxpayers’ money. “We want people to think pharmacy first,” says Michael. “I’ve always wanted to offer these extra services. Now we have the capacity.”

OPENING HOURS: Mon - Fri 8:30am - 6pm, apart from Thursdays when it closes at 5:30pm. Saturdays, 9am - 5pm.

The pharmacy offers free blood pressure checks and free blood glucose tests to patients to monitor and help diagnose any medical conditions such as diabetes. The pharmacy can provide cholesterol checks to patients and a 12 step weight-management service with one-to-one support and advice to change your diet and lifestyle.

If you’re worried you may be allergic to something or intolerant of a food in your diet, Broadway Pharmacy may be able to set your mind at ease with a simple in-store test which checks for 12 food allergens such as wheat, milk, eggs or nuts, and 12 inhaled allergens such as dust, pollen or house mites.
