Building inspectors, Preston, Building inspectors, North West, Building Inspectors, Lancashire

If you’re preparing to have building work done, you now have another option to the council’s building inspector. Ball and Berry Ltd can inspect and approve any work which requires Building Regulations permission. Their service is proving hugely popular – in seven years it has grown to 15 staff and plans are afoot to open offices further afield. “People really like the service they receive,” says co-founder Phil Ball. “We’re seen as team members, rather than obstacles, in the building process.” Phil and Steve Berry – both  former Chief Building Inspectors at Preston and Blackpool councils – founded the firm in 2008 to provide a high-quality and helpful service to people in the local area. After a phased retirement, Steve left in April. “We wanted to offer a service where we help you through the Building Regulations process, rather than hinder you,” says Phil. “We’re always happy to provide advice to householders who plan extensions or alterations to their homes.” The two friends started in Steve’s garage and after three years, were joined by David Hodgson and Paul McNeill in 2010. Their main role is to protect your interests by verifying that any building work is undertaken in line with Building Regulations. They examine construction plans and inspect work as it progresses, looking to check it is being done in accordance with the regulations. On a typical extension they may visit several times to assess and advise, giving you confidence work is being done correctly. Phil stresses their role is not to find fault. “We like nothing more than to say a project is going well and to work with good contractors – it makes our job easier!”    However, when things do not go  well, Ball and Berry help to find solutions to any problems. They work on all types of projects – many local, such as the Dewlay Cheese Shop in Garstang (below) – including home extensions, loft conversions and new houses up to non-domestic buildings costing millions. With competitive prices, the firm is bureaucracy-free and easily contactable, being available evenings and Saturday mornings.
