For the best experience you can give your little ones, the team at Wheelton Nursery is hard to beat. The village hall has been home to a children’s nursery for more than 30 years and has gone from strength to strength since Rachel Trenchard and her sister-in-law Kirsty Burgoyne took it on as a family business 11 years ago. Such has been the positive experience enjoyed by children and parents that Progressive Childcare Ltd has expanded its services over the past 11 years. It now also runs a nursery, breakfast club and out-of-school club at Gillibrand Primary School, Chorley; a breakfast club and after-school club at St Chad’s Catholic Primary School, Whittle-le-Woods and an after-school club at Withnell Fold Methodist Church Hall for Withnell Fold Primary School. Plus there’s a holiday club at the village hall that runs from 7.45am until 6pm in all school holidays except Christmas. With a glowing Ofsted report and many positive testimonials from satisfied parents, Rachel says: “Our team of 18 staff are all highly qualified – many to NVQ level 3 and beyond. “They know how to settle children in and help them to learn through play and fun. “Some staff have been with us for up to 10 years. It isn’t uncommon for a family, over the course of a few years, to have more than one child looked after by the same practitioner.” Area manager Karen Lane adds: “Here at Wheelton Nursery, the children not only have lots of fun but they are learning through their play in our excellent environment, supported by a team of dedicated practitioners.” The nursery is conveniently positioned a mile from Junction 8 of the M61 motorway, and three miles from Junction 3 of the M65 motorway. Wheelton Nursery is open from 7.45am until 6pm, Monday to Friday and operates an open door policy for prospective customers. Rachel says: “Parents can call in for a look any time without making an appointment so they see the nursery running as it would on a typical day.” The learning and development opportunities provided build on what children learn at home and is planned, based on the individual needs of each child, using the Early Years Foundation Stage. Children learn through discovery, experience and play and the curriculum reflects the seven areas of learning. Each child’s key person keeps records of their progress which are used to ensure their development is supported effectively. Giving parents a choice that suits their lives is key. Rachel says: “We have five main time periods through the course of a day at nursery. “Our parents can choose what suits them. For example, a parent may want their child looked after from 7.45am until noon on one day but from 1-4pm on two days a week. Whatever you want, we can tailor a package to suit.” Places are offered via the Government’s Nursery Education Grant for three to four year-olds and some two-year-olds.     The nursery has gained the Lancashire County Council Step Into Quality Award and is now working towards the Lancashire Quality Award, developed by Lancashire County Council’s Sure Start, Early Years and Childcare Services.     Children are offered a range of healthy snacks at the nursery and parents are encouraged to pack a healthy lunchbox. Rachel says: “We are also registered as a tooth-friendly nursery so we limit sugar served in the snacks and also encourage parents to reduce sugar and not pack sweets.” Activities in the summer months include nature walks and a sports day on the village green, as well as autumn treasure hunts, Christmas plays and leavers’ presentations. Rachel adds: “We are open 50 weeks a year and our prices are competitive. If you want to look around, we look forward to giving you a friendly welcome.”
