Whatever you need for home improvements, Leyland-based C & W Berry Ltd is the outstanding source for all construction and DIY materials in the North West of England. And this family-owned firm is proud to boast that nobody does it better. It was founded in 1954 by brothers Walter and Colin Berry as a joinery manufacturer in King Street, Leyland. Managing director David Berry says: “We are proud that many of our staff have been with us for their entire working lives and we even have the third generation of some families working here.” After purchasing the current premises on Golden Hill Lane in 1961, C & W Berry began to specialise in importing and machining bulk timber, selling mainly to the building trade. This was soon expanded to a wide range of building materials, available to both the trade and DIY customers. The 1960s and 1970s saw the site expand greatly and Berry’s soon became recognised as the region’s leading supplier of building materials. Today, the main sales site covers more than 24 acres, stocking over 23,000 products from building materials, electrical and lighting, plumbing and heating, joinery products, power and hand tools, paving and fencing and practically anything needed in any construction, building or DIY project. David says: “Our commitment to stock and the quality of our service is what makes C & W Berry a truly unique merchant. Of our 230-plus staff, many have a trade background, ensuring the advice we offer is top notch. Our staff regularly undergo product training, keeping us up to date with the latest industry products and innovations. “And being situated close to the M6/M61/M65 motorway interchange means we are easily accessible to customers from all over the North West. In turn, our fleet of 28 delivery vehicles can efficiently deliver orders large and small to building sites or your home address, throughout the region. Our vehicles are varied in size and type to suit the product and customer. Many are equipped with mechanical offloading equipment for heavy and bulky products.” As one of the largest suppliers of building materials, Berry’s has established an extremely strong buying position, which means the firm can buy in large quantities in order to pass big savings on to customers. Sales and marketing manager Peter Gardner says: “We have a great relationship with all of the major manufacturers which is why we always stock ALL of the biggest brands on the market. Our experience and knowledge of the industry allows us to select the very best range of products for you; we ensure that all items we stock are suitable for the task they are designed for and we do not stock inferior products.” Berry’s site also boasts several display areas including a comprehensive door and window showroom, extensive decorative paving display, timber fence panel range, working garage door section, bespoke wardrobe doors, fitted kitchen units, bathroom suites, kitchen worktops and flooring products. David Berry adds: “We celebrated our 60th anniversary in 2014 and 2017 will see many exciting new developments. “We are proud of the service we provide locally and nationally and can assure Home Handbook readers we guarantee the best, professional service at all times.”

C & W Berry won Best Independent Merchant for the FOURTH time at the annual Builders’ Merchants News Awards. The firm also won Best Community Project – after caring staff gave up their Boxing Day in 2015 to fill sandbags for flood victims in Leyland and Croston – and was shortlisted for Best Website and Best Customer Service.

Customers can place an order at the touch of a button, thanks to C & W Berry’s popular online ordering service.  Since its launch in March last year, more than 2,500 orders have been placed by customers. Internet shoppers have clocked up more than 420,000 unique visits to the website and there have been more than two million page views.  Sales and marketing manager Peter Gardner says: “The main focus at C & W Berry has always been on customer service as we believe this is one area that separates us from the rest of the building supplies industry.  “Due to continued demand from our customers we have made significant investment in our online shop.  “Selling online is certainly a unique solution for a builders’ merchant. We can offer more than 32,000 products online and are keen to stress this service is available to all customers, tradesmen and DIY enthusiasts.”  Ordering from C & W Berry online could not be easier. Just select your products and add them to your basket and the system automatically presents a list of suitable delivery days for you to choose from.  Peter adds: “If you prefer to come into our store, our staff are ready to help with advice.”
