Question:

I have some trees which need some fairly heavy pruning. What's the best time of year to get it done? -TM, Sharoe Green

Answer:

There is no single best time to prune trees but you should try to respect birdlife - nesting season is between March and September and it is illegal to disturb nests. Certain species of trees have a tendency to suffer tears to the bark more easily when pruning at certain times of year - i.e. when the trees are laying down new bark as the growth season starts. These include Whitebeam and Alder amongst others. Try to be aware of the problems arising when pruning trees at certain times of year. Most importantly, carry out correct pruning cuts. The best way to prevent problems is to employ a qualified arborist(tree surgeon) to carry out specialist works on trees
