Question:
Which is the cheapest way to heat a house - keeping the heating on all the time at a low background temperature or setting it off just for the evenings? -RR, Preston
Answer:
I've never been given a definitive answer to this question for as long as I've been in the industry. Some of my customers prefer to run heating all day rather than a couple of hours am and pm and they prefer it (less temperature fluctuation) but comfort shouldn't be confused with efficiency. The general opinion is the longer it's on, the more it costs. There's no point having heating on when nobody's home, and no point heating unused rooms . Houses, families and lifestyles differ. Some people are quite happy at 14 degrees....some like 20 all the time. Some like to wear shorts and T shirts all year round. Controls, insulation and an 'A' rated boiler are king! If you want to get more scientific....note your meter readings at the start of the day and record again at the end. Do this over two days... one day, heating all day, the next, two hours am and pm. (assuming same outside temps) You will then have your answer.... but you probably will be more comfortable on the day when it's on the longest!
