Question:
My car has done 80,000 miles and in the past few months I've noticed a slight whine coming from the engine on a straight run. Could it be the clutch, as someone has told me, or is it nothing to worry about? -MD, Fulwood
Answer:
If it's a constant whine and it's coming from the front, nine times out of 10 it's a wheel bearing. The way to narrow it down is to listen to the noise when you are going round a bend or corner - the tone can change If the tone increases on a right-hand bend, it's a left-hand bearing. If it goes off, it's the right-hand bearing. If it's the right-hand bearing, prove that by taking a left-hand bend - the noise gets louder And vice-versa for a left-hand bearing. Rear-wheel drive vehicles should be less expensive to repair than front-wheel drive.
