Question:

I see a lot of cheap insurance policies on the internet. Are they any good? -Jessica Sheffield, Penwortham, Preston

Answer:

That’s a very good question. All internet purchases are treated by the Financial Services Regulator as ‘non-advised’ sales. What this means, simply, is that it’s like buying a tin of baked beans from the supermarket. If you don’t like them, it’s just hard luck. If this were to happen to you, all you would have lost would be a few pence but if you bought an insurance policy that failed to pay a claim because it was set up on the wrong basis, then you could have a serious problem to deal with. A recent survey showed that a large percentage of policies set up on the internet were set up on the wrong basis and with a simple motor insurance being based on over 20 different rating factors it’s quite easy for an untrained person to get it wrong. Perhaps this is why the use of the internet for insurance sales has fallen by 20% this year. My advice has to be always take out insurance through an independent professional. This makes your purchase an ‘advised’ sale and the professional is legally responsible for the advice that they give – giving you 100% piece of mind.
